A Random Orbital Sander is a hand-held tool that is used for sanding surfaces, such as, stripping layers of old paint from the wooden surface or smoothening wooden surfaces.

The spinning sanding disc moves in small ellipses of random orbit.

What is the difference between Random Orbital Sander and Orbital Sander?
Random Orbital Sander uses disc-shaped sandpaper. It has a mechanism by which the sanding disc moves in random concentric orbits over the surface.
Orbital Sander uses square or rectangular sandpaper. The motor of an orbital sander causes to and fro movement of the sandpaper on the surface.
What is a Sandpaper Grit?
Sandpaper grit refers to the roughness of the sandpaper. It is defined by gauge number.
The lower the gauge number (#24 or #40), the coarser is the sand paper as the size of the abrasive is larger.
Medium to coarse sandpapers are also called macro grit sandpaper and are used on rough surfaces.
Fine sandpapers are called micro grit sandpaper and the size of the abrasive material is smaller. It is used on smoother surfaces.
