Safety
Working with any hand and power tools requires careful and proper handling. Making safety a priority and habit goes a long way and increases your enjoyment of woodworking.
Make a habit to commit to common sense good practices. Don’t have an attitude and be careless or in a hurry in a wood shop.
Some basic rules of safety are:
- Wear right type of clothes
- Wear safety equipment necessary for the job, such as, eye protection, face shields or masks, ear protection, gloves etc.
- Avoid using anything that can impair your reaction or judgement time, i.e., avoid drugs and alcohol
- Make sure there are no tripping hazard
- Keep floor and shop area clean and tidy
- Store and handle your tools properly
- Don’t use blunt blades and bits
- Disconnect power before changing blades or other components of power tools
- If cutting used boards or pieces of wood, make sure it is free of nails, screws or staples. Inspect the stock and/or use a metal detector before cutting. Nails or pieces of metal when in contact with the saw blade can damage the blade and cause the stock to kick back, causing injury.
